Modern Language Honor Society

I. Membership

A. General Eligibility Requirements:
1. Membership is based on scholarship, in general, and scholarship in the foreign
language, in particular.
2. Membership is restricted to those students currently enrolled in a foreign language at Brother Rice High School
3. Candidates must be enrolled in the first semester of Level III or higher.
4. Transfer students must spend at least one full semester at Brother Rice High
School before becoming eligible.

B. Scholastic Eligibility Requirements:
1. Candidates must have an “A" average in their foreign language during the
semester of selection, as well as an averaged cumulative grade of “A-“ for all work in the language at the secondary level.
2. Candidates must have a “B" average or higher in all other subjects during the
semester of selection, as well as an averaged cumulative grade of "B-“ in all
subjects for work awarded secondary credit.
3. Any semester grade of “C+” or lower in the foreign language automatically
removes the student from consideration.

II. Fees and Awards

A. Students must pay a one-time membership fee of $2.00, payable at the time of acceptance.
B. At initiation, students will be awarded a certificate of membership. They may also
purchase pins, through the Brother Rice MLHS moderator (cost varies from $4 -$12).
C. Graduating members may wear special cords at graduation (to be purchased from
moderator for $12).
D. The official MLHS seal will be affixed to the student's graduation diploma.

 

Membership Obligations

Members are expected to earn 20 points in participation to remain a member in good standing. Points can be earned and combined through the following activities:

  • Attend meetings (6-7 during the year) = 2 points each
  • Check in with Mrs. Rzeszutko for info if you miss the meeting = 1 point
    • Same day as meeting
    • Next day acceptable only if absent from school
  • Sell 1 case of candy = 5 points
    • Additional case = 3 points
  • Tutoring in the foreign language = 1 point per contact
    • NHS shift does NOT count
    • Need tutor pass signed by a teacher
    • Maximum 8 points
  • Work a shift for packi sales = 1 point
  • Work a shift for supplies recycling drive = 1 point
