Library Guidelines for Students
When you Come to the Library:
Before School: The library is open at 7:30 AM. Students do not need to sign-in before 1st period.
Students who have Late Arrival may come to the library, but must sign in at the Reference Desk.
Students from Study Halls must have a pass written by a teacher who has given the student a specific library or research assignment. Before going to the library, students must first report to their Study Hall teacher who must also sign their pass. Then, students proceed to the Reference Desk in the library where they sign in. Passes are good for only one day.
Students coming from the cafeteria at the half bell must also have a pass: the regular white study hall pass, a tutoring pass, or an Honor Roll library pass. Honor Roll passes are given to students who make either the High or the Superior Honor Roll.
Students with early dismissal may come to the library without a pass, but they must sign in at the Reference Desk. All students are expected to be in compliance with the normal school dress code even after school in the library.
Upperclassmen with an open period must enter the library before the tardy bell rings, sign in at the Reference Desk, and must remain in the library until the end of the period.
Student Behavior:
Constant Talking: The library is an academic resource center. Students are expected to be productive. Constant talking is not allowed.
E-Mail and Online Chatting (Instant Messenging): Online chatting (instant messenging) is not allowed at any time. E-mail is allowed only for schoolwork and with permission.
Surfing (recreational) and game playing are not allowed at any time.
Eating and/or drinking in the library is not allowed.
Inappropriate behavior may result in detention(s) and/or removal from the library.

Pilon Learning Resource Center
The Pilon Learning Resource Center (library) contains over 22,000 books, magazines, and audiovisual materials for assigned study and recreational reading and has electronic access to literally millions of other resources. It is open every school day from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. Adjacent to the library is the Audiovisual Center which includes a TV studio or in-school productions. All students and faculty are encouraged to use the library’s many resources.
Several computer terminals contain the library’s fully automated card catalog along with many CD-ROMs for research purposes. The computerized Resource Center also contains 15 terminals available for student access to the Internet.
Periodicals as well as encyclopedias, dictionaries and specialized reference books are located in the library Reference Room. This room is often used for the teaching of research skills and other library-related projects. Upon special request, some reference materials may circulate on an overnight basis. All other books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed if necessary.
To check out a book, students need only present their ID card at the circulation desk. The computerized checkout system will handle the rest. Books are also returned to the circulation desk, although a book drop is available near the In Door of the Resource Center for use during non-school hours. Five cents per school day is charged for overdue books. Students are required to pay for lost books and those damaged beyond reasonable wear and tear.
In addition to reference materials, the Reference Room contains machines for viewing back issues of magazines on microfiche. A copy machine is also available for patron use. It uses a plastic copy card, which is available for purchase at the circulation desk.
Brother Rice High School has established guidelines for the selection of materials for its collection as well as a procedure for challenging library materials. Copies of the guidelines and procedures are available in the library.
The Pilon Learning Resource Center subscribes to the American Library Association’s “Library Bill of Rights”, a copy of which is available in the Center.
